Whatever Works: for De Niro, it's dinner at Circo

Robert De Niro and wife Grace Hightower ducked into Circo for dinner last night, avoiding the cheerful crush at the Royalton after-party for Tribeca Film Festival opener, Woody Allen’s Whatever Works. Whatever worked well enough last night for director Woody Allen, who settled into a Royalton booth with the missus, Soon Yi, after launching his first New York film shoot in four years at the Festival. Greeting guests at the door was Drew Nieporent.  No, “44” at the Royalton is not his restaurant but Drew, the consummate host and ham, can’t help himself. Mini-burgers, franks, falafal balls and De Niro’s festival partners, Jane Rosenthal and husband Craig Hatkoff circulated. Needless to note, the film was like an hour on the couch with Woody, its plot ricocheting comically as an aging genius finds himself marrying a teenish beauty young enough to be his daughter. I’m a Tribeca Festival juror. That’s how I got there.  The Road Food Warrior and I loved the movie though I’m not sure anyone cares. I’m on the jury judging short films. And why not?  A critic is a critic after all.
